LOVESCAPES #9 - Beach Cruiser

Before I moved out of the house, my family decided to go on a cruise—one last "hurrah" together before everything changed. One of the excursions on the cruise took us to Mazatlán, Mexico. We stepped into the bed of a pickup truck and rode to El Faro Lighthouse. On the way, my camera was at the ready. It was a short drive, but I was determined to make the most of it. I took photos of the buildings and cars, the Coca Cola vendors and souvenir markets as we drove by. On a stretch along the coastline, this car slowly passed us in the right lane. I snapped a quick photo and didn't think much of it. When we got back from the cruise and I looked over my photos, I didn't even like this one enough to edit it. I hadn't fit the whole car into the shot, and it was terribly crooked. Nearly three years later, looking for images from the trip to include in a photo book, I found this photo on my hard drive. This time, I was blown away. With a little straightening, it has become one of my all-time favorites. Funny how that works. I love the minimal feel of the frame—including the light post in its center. The warm, matching color palette of the rocks and cement, and the car and the ocean is delightful. I hope someday I can be as cool as this couple cruising down the beach in Mexico. "Beach Cruiser" (although cropped differently) was included in my debut photo book, "Between Places" (2020).
