LOVESCAPES #7 - Sand and Stone
Days before COVID-19 shut down the United States, I was road tripping with two of my friends through the Southwest. On our way to the Grand Canyon, we decided to stop at Monument Valley. I was struck by the immense stillness of the place. It was stark, magnificent, and charged with a nearly tangible spiritual energy. It became immediately clear to me why the Navajo people consider it a sacred place.
Overlooking some of the bluffs is a modest visitor center and gift shop. As my friends took in the view, I noticed them in the window and took a photo. Their reflections distorted the sense of scale in the scene—framed between an "OPEN" sign and the towering rock formations. I'm grateful to Janica and Millie for letting me tag along for an incredible adventure before the world shifted.
On my most recent visit to Monument Valley (in June of 2022) it was amazing how little anything had changed there. Masks were required in the visitor center, but the landscape remained the same. So much else in the world felt different. But it was nice to recognize something constant—something with a timeline that can't begin to be measured in generations.
