On another family road trip, we stopped at Lake Ontario to throw rocks and watch the sunset. Before walking down to the shore, I was mesmerized by the silhouettes of the trees breaking up the sunset-saturated sky. A few steps further, I saw this scene, framed between glass walls and empty tables. On the other side of the building sat an older couple, holding hands in folding chairs, watching the sunset. The emptiness of the space between adds a feeling of stillness... like the party is over and the only thing left to do is wait for nightfall. One side of the frame burns with warmth and intensity. Sunlight doesn't just reflect off of the lake, but even the floor. The sky looks like a flame, dissipating into the faintest of greens. The other half is softer and cooler—gradients of blues and violets filling the space. Tangled branches tie both parts into a single scene, like a loving relationship of its own.
