LOVESCAPES #14 - 2020

After walking towards the Springville wildfire, I arrived as close as was allowed. A police officer was parked on the corner, telling drivers to turn around, and preventing anyone from getting too close. I took a lot of pictures—trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to contextualize the size and emotion of the fire looming above the town. Other onlookers chatted with each other and called loved ones. At some point, this couple walked past me and looked up at the fires from the street corner, colorfully illuminated by the siren lights of the police car. I took this photo of them and felt like I had encapsulated not just that night, but so much of the fear that the year 2020 brought to the world. In a year known for a pandemic, environmental concerns, and police brutality and its resulting protests, I felt like this photograph managed to represent it all in an intimate, quiet way. Whether it's true or not, sometimes it feels like the only thing we can do is look on and hope things gets better.
