ʻIo (Hawaiian hawk)

ʻIo (Hawaiian hawk)

The ʻIo is endemic to Hawaiʻi, occurring naturally only on the Big Island. Your photograph appears to show a dark-morph ʻIo, with rich dark-brown plumage, yellow cere and powerful yellow feet. Perching high on an exposed dead branch is also classic raptor behavior—it provides an open vantage point for scanning the landscape for prey. There’s something particularly powerful about this image because the ʻIo has deep significance in Hawaiian culture and is regarded in some Hawaiian traditions as an ʻaumākua, or ancestral guardian.
