Cold Spring Improv (switch-hand improv over a revisited song)
I made this little revisited tune after not recording for many months. “Revisited” since it's a chord progression I can't get enough of. It's encouraging for me to hear the progress made as a switch-handed guitarist (R on fretboard instead of L after decades). The playing tension and frustration I've known for years is now gone. It might as well be miraculous. I'm excited to share these small triumphs with you, on the way to a full-length recording which I hope to offer soon.
Why the switch? For years I've been playing guitar with a lot of tension. A veteran of the strings, I've learned how to sound good (sometimes great) due to a OG instinct honed over decades. However, my performance-ceiling was far too low. Frustration was inescapable. Then hand-pain numbness and pain started to set in (!), two calls for help I couldn't ignore.
I picked up my first “lefty” guitar in 2004, but didn't commit to regular switch-hand practice for another 7 or 8 years. My first 'no turning back' moment was in 2014, after unsuccessfully practicing a song for 3-4 hours (a moderately difficult one that required more stamina than fancy fretwork)...I was confounded at my inability and worried for the future. I mean, the song was no magnum opus. How much more would my ability deteriorate? That year I knew switch-hand was not an option but was the way. More than a decade after that fateful practice session, I'm very happy to offer Cold Spring Improv as a token of determination, consistent work, and joy, hoping it will inspire someone in some way, regardless of the particulars detailed here.
Recording details: No AI. Rhy guitar was played (no edits), then looped. So I'm not playing that part all the way through tbh. Improv – the harder part lol - was played through, no edits. That's why I'm not into AI music, really. There are already so many gadgets and apps that, for decades, have made the job easier for musicians! I'm not against AI music, though.
Enjoy!
