ROYZ 1
Revolution of Snow
Snow Day
By Billy Collins
Today we woke up to a revolution of snow,
its white flag waving over everything,
the landscape vanished,
not a single mouse to punctuate the blankness,
and beyond these windows
the government buildings smothered,
schools and libraries buried, the post office lost
under the noiseless drift,
the paths of trains softly blocked,
the world fallen under this falling.
In a landscape of white,
everything is new again,
like a page of a book
waiting for the first word to be written.
We could do anything,
go anywhere,
in the silence of this unexpected holiday,
remembering how once,
in this same street,
we built a snowman,
laughing at our clumsy, cold hands,
and how the street seemed to whisper
in the same quiet language of today,
a memory as light as the snowflakes.
