SHANTYTOWN
Big Ugly Love of a Gremlin
This is not Sesame Street. This is Sector 7 of the Shantyverse—where post-colonial ghosts and childhood monsters squat side by side, and tenderness wears combat boots.
Alkēbulan’s untitled piece introduces a surreal street deity: part insect, part cartoon, part cosmic hallucination. Towering over a small corner of urban decay, the monstrous mascot leans protectively over a hooded figure cradling a baby. Behind them, graffitied saints and elders look on, laughing, lurking, judging—or maybe praying.
This image captures the absurd sanctity of survival: a sacred cradle in the most unsacred space. Beauty emerges from the grotesque. Laughter flirts with fear. The hood doesn’t just glitch—it dreams in Saturday morning static and candy-colored distortion.
