Comments: It was Ramadan in Morocco, we sawm to foster piety, gratitude, and compassion. I met and prayed with Ismail and Fatima and their iconic pink textile outside of the Kutubiyya Mosque, near the Jemaa el-Fnaa. This sacred structure was built in 1147; Nearly 1000 years ago! We prayed through our art making and by honoring the holy days of the month until the crescent moon before the big feast. Ismail is a local and talented photographer who makes beautiful portraits about his culture and community. He uses this big pink sheet as the punctum for all of his photographs. The literal cloth that weaves his images together. The pink represents the divine feminine, but it also symbolizes the womb, the portal, that we arrive through onto this planet. All of us humans share this experience, we come from the same place inside our mothers who give us life. The safety and warmth. Religion are the stories that make us feel like we belong, to the bigger picture. To a community of like minded citizens. A belief system that we can reference as a historical artifact. These stories teach us morality, How to treat one another. The fundamental law of civilization. Is art a religion? A story that we create, a belief system that you can imagine? To connect with people, and even a community through the work. Or, is it all love. Love is the common thread between us. It is the vehicle of how we arrive on Earth, it is the energy that gives us purpose throughout our life. God...Allah...the universe... graced us with this time here. How did we get here, where do we come from, where do we go now? We are creators and dreamers. The custodians of Earth, for perhaps someday to go even beyond. Towards the source? To speak to the divine? We must listen to the wind, to the birds, to the intuition that whispers until it becomes a loud aum. A guide to become, who we were meant to be and what we were meant to do. To pray is to commune with the source. To be heard, to manifest our hopes into realization. We all have a dream, we all have needs, we all believe in something. These buildings are attuned and built with precision. A house of worship; They are the temples, churches, and mosques that are home to something greater than us, almost incomprehensible. Art and architecture are imbued into the faith. The frequency of geometric shapes reveals a hidden dimension. Something our ancestors knew, where does this lost knowledge go? In life we prepare and practice for death, so what then is the next phase of consciousness?
