My friend Charlie and I were looking for a place to have lunch as we wandered through the time in preparation for tomorrow's hike to Machu Picchu. He and I loved playing chess so we noticed they had a chess set outfront with a couple of open seats. We decided to play chess and have our lunch here. The women were very kind and the food was out of this world. We both had the Quinoa as this is harvested in Peru. It is always better when its local and for most of the trip around the world I would only eat what the locals are having to connect and learn more about their ways of living. We played 5 games and Charlie had the upper hand. I did win a couple games but I don't think he was paying attention since he was facing the street and I was facing him. Checkmate! A knight took his Queen and a pawn made no way for his king to escape. We continued to play and have tea at the table till nightfall. Went to bed early to wake up at 4 am to hike to the top. We were the first people at the gate to have Machu Picchu to ourselves as I had done back in 2016. I always recommend the early morning hike instead of the bus. Both up and down the mountain.
