Comments: Ethan and I were staying on the fourth floor of the corner apartment by Cimetière du Père-Lachaise on Av. Gambetta. We were walking towards the center of the city to have a late lunch when we spotted a cute community park called, La TEP Ménilmontant. We walked inside and adventured all around the garden. We sat under the trees on a bench soaking up the rest of the sunlight through the shadows of the leaves. In that meditative moment, I knew this was the place we had to make a portrait. The energy here was lively and there were groups of people sitting in the garden on other benches, playing football in the field, and men and women standing around the small cabin where they were growing flowers and a couple playing guitars inside. It was a true community space. I noticed this kind woman with a gentle smile on her face. Her name, Christine. We spoke in broken English and French to each other about how wonderful this park was, and I asked if she would like to be in the project. She kindly agreed and waited for me to direct her. I gestured to stand in front of the football game. She stood there and I said nothing. I watched and waited for the game to begin behind her. Looking for the moment where her stillness compliments the activity of the game, a marriage of motion and contemplation.
