Title: August 13th - 11:41 Medium: Super-8 film Aspect Ratio: 4:3 Resolution: 2880 x 2160 File Type: H.264 Codec / MP4. Comments: Chris visited Ethan and I at a spot we rented in Idaho close by to Yellowstone National Park. He joined us for a couple days to hike around the dormant super volcano teeming with life. The first day we visited the park we stopped into where Old Faithful puts on her show. There is something that feels really strange waiting for this eruption. It's kind of an externalized sexual experience seeing mother Earth come to a climax, while everyone gathers around like a voyeur finding their excitement tickled every so often being teased by moans and hot air by the geyser awaiting the reliable blast of steam and water 30 feet in the sky. And when it happens, it is quite the thrill. Because you stand and wait patiently. It could take 20 minutes or 2 hours. The explosion happens out of nowhere and it shocks you. It lasts for a couple minutes before cooling down again. We walked towards the thermal pools next, where there are a few boardwalks to follow along. Reading warning signs that said. Do not go off the track or your body will boil and burn. You are not permitted to bring your pets to the park either, aside from all the wildlife roaming the park. I've heard horror stories while we were there that a man jumped into the thermal pools to rescue his dogs and also perished in the boiling water. It is no fucking joke, we have to respect nature because it can easily change or take ones life! On a more positive note; We met man named Trevor, wearing a Super 8 hat. IHe commented on my cameras and I thought this was the perfect place and person to shoot the portrait of the day in the middle of a steaming hot sulfuric field that can have a major eruption at any moment. Chris really saved the day here because as I went to photograph Trevor with the Polaroid to mark the day and time, I realized I forgot to pack film and the camera was empty. I panicked for a second not knowing what to do and I ruined the photo of the day like I thought I did back when we shot Henrick in Malibu. Chris acted quick and tore off the Polaroid camera off his strap that he brought and handed it to me to make the shot. I am grateful he had this camera otherwise I would've been fucked. Therefore I shot Trevor with Chris's SX70 film with a fine lens that differs from my 600 camera. This is the only Polaroid in the project that has this kind of depth, it does break the visual consistency as a small hiccup, but at the end of the day we got the shot we needed to and sometimes you literally have to use what you got and be resourceful. Thank you Chris for thinking ahead and for being a great photographer who also shoots Polaroids too. The orange pools behind him were bubbling and popping steam into the air that you can smell the rotten egg scent of sulfur, although its healthy for you if you have asthma like I do. We were so blessed to visit this place when we did and make this portrait because just a few months ago there was a massive eruption in this same exact place! Thankfully, no one was hurt. The boardwalk we walked on was destroyed and there was a massive geyser explosion almost 20 times larger and more powerful than old faithful all at once. Us humans take for granted the majesty of nature. We think we can tame it and control her. Until we get humbled real quickly by her wrath and power. It is vital that we work with the planet, to honor her like a mother gave birth to us as her children, because she did! Over millions of years. Why do we think we are better than her; Because we can think at all? How did we stray so far from our home that we forgot we were a part of it all along? It is time to return home. Rebuild our cities surrounded by green. Live in the forest with the fruiting trees, symbiotically and synergistically. It is time we create that harmony with mom, before we are all gone. By fire, by floods, by earthquakes, or hurricanes; These four elements can take our life in a flash of lightning bolt. Humans are the caretakers of Earth. We have limited time here, so let's give it our best.
