I didn’t set out to make a photograph about power or lineage, but those ideas surfaced on their own once the image existed. At the time, I was working at a resort. This image came from one of the times the photo subject and myself worked together, and it remains one of the pieces I return to most often. Nothing about the making of this photograph was elaborate. The hairpins were already in my room. The dress was something I owned. There was no production team, no borrowed symbolism, no attempt to reconstruct history. What interested me was how easily everyday objects could be rearranged into something that felt charged. How meaning could emerge without being forced. The process was intuitive and immediate, guided more by attention than by planning. That tension matters. I think it mirrors how many histories are carried: through the body, through posture, through things that survive because they are used, not preserved behind glass.
