Immurement
The walls rise slowly. Stone against skin. Silence against breath. One layer, then another, until the outside world becomes a distant rumor and the body is left alone with the unbearable fact of itself.
Nothing comes to rescue it.
Nothing comes to explain it.
The name becomes useless. The face becomes useless. The story becomes useless. Even the desire to escape begins to lose its authority. What remains cannot be performed. It can only be endured.
Inside the enclosure, the thing that once wanted to flee discovers the violence of its own dispersion. Every fragment turns inward. Every wandering thought returns to the same dark center.
The walls do not become thinner.
The prisoner becomes deeper.
And what first appeared to be imprisonment begins, almost imperceptibly, to become a vessel.
Not freedom.
Not yet.
But containment.
The terrible first form of peace.
