Pepa Khalo
This work reinterprets the iconic imagery of Frida Kahlo through the figure of Pepe the Frog, transforming him into a parodic yet evocative self-portrait. Pepe appears at the center of the canvas, with the unmistakable unibrow and a crown of tropical flowers that recall Mexican tradition. His frontal, motionless gaze, typical of Kahlo’s naïve style, conveys a sense of melancholy and silent resilience.
Around him unfolds a lush nature: green foliage, vivid flowers, and animal presences such as the monkey and the parrot, recurring symbols in Kahlo’s oeuvre, here assuming an ironic yet equally suggestive tone. The chromatic palette is intense, with incandescent reds, deep greens, and saturated blues, blending into an atmosphere suspended between folk realism and inner surrealism.
The result is a hybrid of folklore, symbolism, and contemporary memetic culture: an ironic and affectionate tribute to Frida Kahlo, where the language of modern painting meets the digital iconography of Pepe, generating a short-circuit between art history and the visual culture of the web.
