Revolution in Color Pepe

Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People is the quintessential image of Romantic revolution. Painted in the wake of the July Revolution of 1830, it fuses allegory and reality: Liberty strides forward as both goddess and woman of the people, the tricolor flag raised high above barricades of fallen bodies. The canvas embodies Romanticism’s fervor, movement, passion, and the conviction that art could become a call to freedom. Delacroix wielded color like fire, painting liberty not as ideal calm but as storm and blood. This piece recalls Delacroix’s oil on canvas, with fiery reds, deep ultramarines, and vigorous, stormy brushwork. Pepe takes the place of Liberty, or lies among the fallen, comic intruder in the tragic theater of revolution, parody hero in a storm of freedom.
