The Calling of Saint Pepe

Caravaggio’s Calling of Saint Matthew, painted for the Contarelli Chapel in Rome, is one of the defining images of the Baroque. Christ enters a shadowed tavern, his gesture illuminated by a sudden shaft of light that cuts through the darkness. Around the table, unaware figures linger in the mundane world, until revelation intrudes. Here the sacred is staged as everyday drama, theology unfolding in the grit of Roman life. It is the perfect synthesis of divine mystery and stark realism. The work recalls oil on canvas with Caravaggio’s signature chiaroscuro—deep shadows, golden beams, and tense gestures frozen at the threshold of decision. Pepe takes the place of Matthew, parody apostle caught in the blinding light, comic yet drawn into the gravity of revelation
