In ancient Greece, the fig tree was considered almost a “tree between worlds.” It was not as majestic as the oak, nor as “pure” as the laurel. The fig is soft, milky, unfolding, almost flesh-like. There was always something intimate and forbidden surrounding it. The first fig was given to humanity by the goddess of agriculture, Demeter — as a sign that humans no longer lived by hunger and fear alone.
