Sunflowers Over Suicide
Sleepy Time Asylum
A conversation I had with an emergency room doctor while going through distress.
Me: I’m a recovering drug addict and I do not want anything prescribed to me that is a narcotic.
I need help. I want to be admitted to the psychiatric ward so I can get some help from a psychiatrist.
Doc: Do you want to harm yourself?
Me: No.
Doc: Do you want to harm anyone else?
Me: No.
Doc: (While laughing)
Then you can’t be admitted to the psychiatric ward.
Here’s a prescription.
Take these pills, they will help.
(I Look at the prescription)
Me: This is Xanax. I can’t take that. It’s a narcotic.
Doc: (While laughing again)
It’s only half a milligram. Just take it as prescribed. You will be fine.

I was sent home.
I took all the pills early the next morning.
Along with a bottle of my wife’s 500 mg hydrocodone.
My drug dealer was a doctor.
True story from my life in 2006
That was May 16, 2006
The next day was my son Malachi’s first birthday on May 17th 2006
That is the only birthday I have ever missed of my sons.
I was in a psychiatric ward for an attempted suicide.
