Arianne King Comer Artist, Teacher, Advocate, Storyteller Arianne King Comer, a textile artist specializing in the ancient technique of batik, endeavors to empower the world through art. Her message that art is a journey frees people to create without judgment. As an artist, Arianne’s textile works and paintings depicting Gullah and South Carolina history have been celebrated worldwide. Arianne is a graduate of Howard University who discovered her passion for dying with indigo when she received the UN/UNSIS grant to study under renowned Batik artist Nike Olyani Davis in Oshogbo, Nigeria. Future travels took her to Istanbul, Turkey, as a guest artist, and Nairobi, Kenya, to conduct a textile workshop in batik and indigo at the World Social Forum. Her story is featured in the PBS documentary Messengers of the Spirit and a segment on HGTV’s Country Style. She is a member of Alternate ROOTS, Charleston Rhizome Collective, and a designer for Seeking Indigo. Her collection of wearable art is available at the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
