Enlil’s Breath of Life
In the ancient time of 3000 BCE, between the Tigris and Euphrates, the world was a single, formless mass where the sky (An) and earth (Ki) lay fused together, shrouded in darkness. No life could emerge from this primal union. Enlil, the great god of air and lord of the earth, rose to bring order. With his mighty will, he summoned his divine breath, a powerful wind that stirred the silence. Alone, he lifted his hands and separated the sky from the earth, creating a space between them. The ground quaked, and a rift opened as light broke through, marking the birth of the heavens. His breath filled this void, laying the foundation for life to come—creatures, plants, and eventually humans, as the gods later willed.
