In those days, the idols had changed — at least on the surface — since their deeper nature remained the same. They were still fed by humans, and thus they grew fat. The difference was that they were no longer nourished with fruit or flowers, enticing to flies, but with electric pulses and social signals. Blood, however, remained on the menu.
