Afterimage
After death, memory does not preserve a person intact. It produces an afterimage: unstable, partial, sometimes more vivid precisely because its source has disappeared.
Since my mother died, I have become increasingly conscious of the distance between remembering someone and reconstructing them. Every recollection alters what it attempts to preserve. Afterimage comes from that contradiction: the desire to keep a presence alive while knowing that memory is already transforming it.
