Inheritance
We inherit far more than objects. We inherit gestures, expressions, fears, habits, fragments of language, ways of loving and ways of resisting. After a parent dies, these transmissions become strangely visible.
Inheritance considers identity as something inhabited by others. My mother is absent as a body, yet parts of her continue through me and through my family. Mourning made me understand inheritance not as possession, but as the persistence of one life inside another.
