People of the Sahara
Sailing Off from the Desert
Traditionally, the Sahara meets the sea in a unique blend of cultures, and in this coastal stretch of Mauritania, the desert’s people also embrace the sea. This handmade wooden pirogue, with its sails unfurled, glides through the protected waters of Banc d’Arguin, symbolizing the delicate balance between land and sea. Unfortunately, this age-old fishing practice is fading due to industrial overfishing, making this image a poignant reminder of a disappearing tradition.
