People of the Sahara
Sbua Celebration
Faith and tradition unite the Zenata Berbers of Algeria’s remote Gourara region during the Sbua pilgrimage. Each year, communities gather at sacred sites, including the tombs of local saints, to honor ancestral customs. Prayers, ritual ceremonies, and the rhythmic sounds of traditional music resonate across the desert, blending spirituality with cultural heritage. Beyond its religious significance, Sbua is a vibrant social event: families reunite, stories and legends are shared, and markets come alive with trade and conversation. For the Zenata people, the pilgrimage is a living link between past and present, preserving communal identity and the enduring spirit of the Sahara’s desert communities.
