Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Under the Sudden Shower at Shono
A playful reimagining of “Shōno, Sudden Shower” (Shōno-juku, ca. 1833–1834) from Utagawa Hiroshige’s Tōkaidō Hōeidō series, a masterpiece of the Edo period. In the original print, travelers scramble under a sudden downpour, their straw hats and cloaks bent by the force of wind and rain as they cross a shallow stream.
In this reinterpretation, Pepe takes the place of one of the wayfarers, calmly enduring the storm with a gentle smile. The atmosphere retains Hiroshige’s iconic diagonal rain, misty forests, and muted indigo palette, preserving the ukiyo-e mood of ephemerality and the fragility of human movement within nature. The presence of Pepe introduces a subtle, humorous counterpoint, standing in contrast to the hurried figures, an anachronistic traveler crossing the Tōkaidō with serene acceptance.
