Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe in the Golden Age of Shonen Heroes
This work reimagines the explosive rise of Weekly Shōnen Jump during the 1980s, an era defined by over-the-top heroism, muscular optimism, and the birth of some of Japan’s most iconic manga protagonists. Pepe is inserted at the center of this constellation of legendary characters, echoing the ensemble covers that celebrated Jump’s million-copy circulation milestone.
The composition directly references the bright, grain-textured aesthetics of vintage Jump posters, where camaraderie and competitive spirit were rendered in thick outlines and saturated primaries. Surrounded by figures visually evoking Saint Seiya, Kinnikuman, Hokuto no Ken, and other foundational shōnen archetypes, Pepe becomes both homage and disruption, an outsider folded into the heroic canon, mirroring how these magazines often introduced new protagonists by placing them beside established icons.
Much like the Shōwa-era heroes who embodied discipline, courage, and youthful perseverance, Pepe adopts their visual grammar while subtly shifting the emotional register: his melancholic eyes contrast with the high-energy optimism of his companions, creating an affectionate and ironic commentary on the myth-making machinery of 1980s manga culture.
