Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe Ceremonial Mask with Gilded Arabesques
This work reimagines an Edo-period ceremonial mask through the iconic visage of Pepe, rendered in lacquered browns and adorned with delicate gilded arabesques. The surface imitates aged urushi with fine craquelure, while the golden eyes and floral crest evoke the ornamental refinement of kōgei craftsmanship. Though playful in spirit, the mask preserves the solemnity and symbolic weight of ritual objects used in festivals and theatrical rites, merging humorous contemporary iconography with the disciplined elegance of Edo decorative arts.
