Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe in the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons
Inspired by the legendary Hyakki Yagyō, the “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons” depicted in Edo-period emakimono, this work transforms the traditional procession of yōkai into a surreal, humorous tableau populated by Pepe-like figures. Under a dim full moon and the soft glow of paper lanterns, amphibian monks and animal-spirits march side by side with skeletal apparitions, oni, and fox-demons. While the composition echoes classical ukiyo-e depictions of ghostly parades, the playful distortion of faces, especially Pepe in the role of the long-nosed tengu, reframes the nocturnal spectacle between parody and homage. The result is a hybrid visual myth: a digital reinterpretation that preserves the eerie atmosphere of Edo folklore while infusing it with contemporary meme-culture iconography.
