Pephistory of Art Vol. II - From Ukiyo-e to Manga: A Pepe Monogatari
Pepe at the Ryogoku Fireworks
Inspired by the famed summer fireworks at Ryōgoku, this work reinterprets the classic ukiyo-e night festival through the quiet, contemplative presence of Pepe. Seated in a small wooden boat, wearing a simple yukata, he watches the golden bursts illuminate the Sumida River while dozens of vessels drift beneath the great bridge. The warm glow of a paper lantern reflects gently on the rippling water, echoing the atmospheric serenity typical of Edo-period nocturnal scenes. The piece preserves the mood and composition of traditional woodblock prints while introducing a subtle, humorous twist through Pepe’s meditative gaze.
