"Last Stand..." ' "Die standing rather than live on my knees like slaves!" "There is no more beauty to be had from life, so let us then seek a beautiful death!" Two dying warriors, lord and executioner, meet in the snow-choked pass after all others have fallen. They speak the defiant words, clash in a single lethal instant, and impale each other. Neither kneels. Neither falls. They die standing, locked together in eternal defiance, becoming the final, unbreakable image of the lost battle. Only two remained. .... Armor split, left arm useless, katana trembling in his good hand. And the Shogun’s executioner — faceless helm, nodachi dripping red, breathing slow as death itself. They faced each other across ten paces of trampled, crimson snow. One spoke first, voice raw but clear. “Die standing,” he said, “rather than live on our knees like slaves.” The executioner tilted his head — no reply, only the soft creak of lacquered plates. “There is no more beauty to be had from life,” he continued, almost gently, “so let us then seek a beautiful death.” One step....Then another....No flourish.... No roar. They met in the center, like two shadows colliding. Steel sang once — twice. The katana opened the executioner from collar to hip. Both staggered....Neither knelt....They stood locked together, blades buried deep, foreheads almost touching, blood pooling black on white. The executioner: long exhale. Then silence. When the snow finally stopped, hours later, two figures remained upright in the pass — embracing in death, swords still crossed, refusing to fall. Two sword lines, carved deep: Die standing rather than live on our knees like slaves. There is no more beauty to be had from life, so let us then seek a beautiful death. The wind reads them still. That was their last battle. Two men. One moment. Unbroken. A last stand...
