What The Living Room Witnessed

This painting is my way of remembering the story of OGUNAMEN beyond the tragedy that became part of his story. Inspired by the songs and oral history passed down by my grandfather, Chief Umobuarie Igberaese, I wanted to imagine a moment when life was simply happening when he could sit in his favourite chair, enjoy a bottle of Coca Cola, and exist without knowing how the future would remember him. I painted him seated in a purple armchair, dressed in an ordinary shirt and trousers, with his red beads resting against his skin. The yellow halo behind his head represents the dignity, honour, and presence I believe he deserves to be remembered for. To me, he is more than a character in a song. He was a human being who lived, loved, and experienced the ordinary moments that make up a life. Growing up with this story, I knew the tragedy. But as an artist, I began asking myself: What about the moments before it? What did his everyday life look like? What memories existed in the spaces he occupied? These questions became the starting point for this work. For me, transformation begins with the way we remember. A story inherited through song becomes a painting; a painful family history becomes an opportunity to reflect on love, trust, and the fragility of human relationships. Through this process, I am not trying to change what happened. I am trying to change how we see the man at the centre of it. What the Living Room Witnessed is deeply personal because it allows me to reconnect with a history I inherited and give it a new form. I want viewers to look beyond the tragedy and see the life that existed before it, to recognise how an ordinary room can hold memories that become more meaningful with time. Perhaps our homes witness more than we realise. They hold our laughter, our conversations, our silences, and the moments we never imagine will one day become memories. Through this painting, I ask: when a life becomes a story, do we remember the person, or only the way their story ended?
