While I Still Can

While I Still Can

One day, I will be gone. It is a simple truth, yet one I can spend entire days avoiding. There are things to do, places to be, problems to solve. Life keeps demanding my attention, and I keep giving it away as though I have an endless supply of time. But somewhere in the distance, the darkness is waiting. I cannot see when it will reach me. I cannot know how much time remains between this moment and the last. I only know that the flowers will one day bloom without me, the sky will change its colours without me, and the world I have spent my life trying to understand will continue turning long after I have left it. And that thought frightens me. Not because life has been perfect. It hasn't. There have been losses, regrets, pain, and moments I wish I could live differently. There are things I would change if I could, words I wish I had said, and moments I wish I had understood while I was still living them. But there is also so much beauty. So much that I have yet to see, so many conversations I have yet to have, so much love I have yet to give. There are ordinary days ahead that I will probably take for granted, never knowing how precious they were until they become memories. I cannot stop the darkness from coming. None of us can. But perhaps I don't have to spend the time I have fearing it. Perhaps I can stand here, in the middle of all this colour, and allow myself to see what is still beautiful. Perhaps I can hold the people I love a little closer, pay more attention, worry a little less about the things that won't matter in the end, and stop postponing the life I keep telling myself I will live someday. Because someday is not a promise. This moment is all I can truly call my own. The flowers will fade. The rainbow will disappear. The darkness will eventually reach us all. But while I am here, I want to be here. Not merely to exist. Not simply to count the days. But to feel them, to live them, to love fiercely, to make mistakes, to create something meaningful, and to notice the extraordinary beauty of a world I will one day have to leave. I cannot choose how long I have. But while I still can, I can choose how I live. And for now, that has to be enough.
