As a child, I loved putting a big seashell to my ear to listen to the sound of the sea. The sea was nowhere near my hometown, but I had visited it once and was in awe of its liquid splendor. Later I learned that it was not the sound of the sea at all, but a transformation of the ambient sound around me inside of the shell. The House That Greg Built is a digital architectural seashell. Outside its walls, the environment is hostile and discordant. Yet, stepping inside the grid provides an immediate relief. Just as a seashell traps the ambient noise of a room and amplifies the low frequencies into the rolling roar of the tide, the structure of the house acts as a resonant cavity. It captures the external chaos, baffles the violence, and filters it down into a continuous, comforting white noise. The house is made of keyboards with all the keys stuck for no contact with the outside.
