Along Ireland's shores in 1588, sailors from the Spanish Armada met their deaths when their ships went on the rocks in foul weather. They were returning home from a failed attempt to invade England. Some 6,000 sailors on 24 ships perished along the 500 km. stretch of coastline. Most survivors were executed, while some escaped to Scotland.
