Symbol of Japan
With the name of each country, we instinctively recall its historic and iconic buildings; it’s as if a face of that country, along with its landmarks, forms in our minds. In this painting, I have depicted Japan not with conventional lines, but with a fantastical face; a face whose features are chosen from the soothing architecture of this land.
The Meiji Tempel, like a calm and dignified crown, rests atop this face. Tokyo Tower, in the center of the face, symbolizes resilience and progress. The eyes have taken life from the grandeur of Senso-ji Temple and Osaka Castle, conveying a gaze that is both peaceful and steadfast. The mouth, inspired by Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, whispers the message of peace—silent, yet full of meaning. And the cloak of this magnificent face is adorned with the Golden Pavilion, draping the culture of Japan.
This work is an attempt to portray the face of a country through its architecture; with the memories each building holds within itself.
