A void opens at the intersection that connects two cities through their names. The work is the void — not the extraction, not the fragment. The extracted fragment and the void it leaves are indivisible parts of the same act. Rúa Londres was inaugurated in 2003 as a reciprocal correspondence to Vigo Street, a short street in central London named since the 18th century to commemorate the Anglo-Dutch naval victory over the Franco-Spanish fleet at the Battle of Rande in 1702 in the Vigo estuary. The intersection stands next to the MARCO — Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vigo. The void beside the institution that exhibits art. The street named in honour of a defeat remembered as victory on the other side of the sea. Mature peoples name each other — London named a street after the battle in 1702, Vigo responded three centuries later with the reciprocal street in 2003. The past does not determine the future: what was once a wound can become mutual recognition.
