Châteaux
Moat-ivation
This château was one of the top places I wanted to see on our France trip this year. The turrets and moat made this beautiful castle super unique, and it reminded me of a small, abandoned castle in New York state that my husband and I had our wedding photos taken at. It was mid-day when we arrived at the chateau in Northern France and it sat inside a tall set of iron gates, that were surprisingly open. Usually, the gates of abandoned places are closed and locked up tight, so this made my husband a little nervous. There had been another chateau on our trip that had open gates, and we were almost seen trying to enter through the back door. That château was long and skinny, so we could see through the back windows and out the front windows. And as my husband reached for the doorknob, we saw a few landscapers through the windows who looked to be cleaning up the castle grounds. We ducked down quickly and ran back through the woods that we came from. So, to see open gates again, made us wonder why they were open and if we would be seen. Between the two of us, I am usually the most anxious, and sometimes I rely on my husband to calm me down, and I trust his intuition. But in this case, I was determined to shoot this castle because it was one that motivated me to plan this trip. So, we ditched the car, approached the gates, and followed the dirt path. The closer to the castle we got, the less nervous I felt. The grounds looked like a park, and the castle was marked with a no trespassing sign. I wondered if the grounds were fair game. As I was flying my drone, two men entered the grounds. Would we get yelled at and asked to leave? I kept furiously snapping photos while they approached. They eventually said hello and pulled out a camera, so I knew we were safe. They were there to do the same thing we were. In that moment, the light shone brightly, illuminating the château. With the moody clouds in the background, we were in the right place at the right time. We finished up our flights, took some hand-held photos and made our way back to the car. After looking at the previews from my drone, I knew instantly that this would be one of my favorite photos of the trip.
