Last Stop Before Midnight

Last Stop Before Midnight

The alien pushed a rusted cart, its wheels screaming against the frozen asphalt – a junkyard Christmas tree strapped on tight, the ornaments hung like sins remembered. Behind the derelict motel, the windows stared hollow and dead, orange doors peeling into oblivion, shadows of the forgotten lingering in the cracks. Snow lay thick, a cruel disguise for rot – a burial ground for desperate men, mothers clawing at motel sheets, and the laughter of things that never were. Somewhere overhead, the sky watched and grinned, its pale light flickering like a busted marquee. The alien stood still for a moment, silent and knowing. This was Christmas in the wasteland: no angels to herald, no shepherds to come, just a tree and its keeper, moving forward because there was nothing left to stop them.
