Timeless Series
Held in Her Keeping
Winter lingers here,
along the Yellowstone River
where snow still gathers
in quiet folds across the earth,
and spring arrives slowly,
one breath at a time.
A young bison calf stands apart,
so small against the white valley,
new to this world,
both beautiful and unforgiving.
Her mother watches.
Her gaze never leaves her.
Across the distance between them,
there is an invisible thread,
woven from instinct,
from devotion,
from a love as old as the valley itself.
She knows what awaits her calf.
The storms that may yet come,
The long, harsh winters
The deep snows
The wolves that move unseen
through the sage and timber.
The hardships carried by every creature
born into the wild.
Yet she cannot walk the path for her.
She can only protect and guide
as best she can.
The mother knows she won’t have her for long.
But on this quiet morning,
between winter and spring,
between dependence and freedom,
she remains
held in her keeping.
