Canon Of The Familiar
Teleological Instinct
Everything happens for a reason.
A reason requires a mind.
Something that considered the options,
weighed them, chose this.
So whose was it?
I keep thinking about
the people for whom no reason shows up.
Who sift and sift and find nothing that fits,
just the thing that happened
sitting there,
not pointing anywhere.
What do we say to them?
That they didn't look hard enough?
That the reason is too large to see?
That it'll make sense later,
from farther away,
from somewhere after this?
Maybe.
Or maybe some things happen
and there's no one behind them.
No lesson folded inside.
Just the event.
Just you, after it.
Just the question you'll keep asking
that doesn't have an answer
shaped like a reason.
