As a child, Caroline loved drawing and painting, so this project provided a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with a creative outlet in a new and exciting way through generative art. Artist Statement: I created this image to capture the beauty of Yosemite, drawing inspiration from a camping trip I have planned there this summer. Imagining the landscape and looking at photos for inspiration, I wanted to convey a sense of excitement and anticipation of visiting somewhere new. To express this feeling, I used a warm, vibrant color palette and an inviting aesthetic. The animated elements suggest a summer breeze and thriving sense of life. However, I wanted to keep the animation minimal to maintain a feeling of peace and stillness. I also wanted to balance cartoonish objects, such as the simply depicted people, with more realistic objects, like the clouds, in order to reflect both my childhood fascination with nature and my more profound appreciation for it as a young adult. Using generative art tools also played an important role in this piece because it allowed for unexpected outcomes like the silhouette figures, giving the image a dream-like quality. With these fantasy elements, the image is both imaginative and reflective by blending anticipation with nostalgia. The title “Appreciation” emphasizes the importance of slowing down to appreciate the natural world and enjoy beautiful landscapes. I hope this image provokes a similar sense of excitement, awe, and contemplation in the viewer.
