The Sama of the Soul
I have lent my ear to a hymn that the earth has no strength to hold;
A melody so immense, so awe-inspiring,
That these bones and this frail skin can no longer contain its reverberation.
This footwork is no fleeting dance of mortal delight;
This arm outstretched toward the boundless sky
Is the yearning of a soul for whom the cage has grown too narrow.
I spin not in merrymaking, but out of sheer impatience of being;
I spin so the fetters of matter might tear apart;
I spin because the grandeur of this celestial song weighs so heavily upon my marrow
That the flesh can no longer bear to hold the spirit within.
Behold the fish of this primordial sea, humming in unison with my gyration;
And that ancient Eye at the sun’s edge, witnessing my unraveling, my turning into flame.
This is the Sama—the shedding of earthly weight;
The bursting of a soul that overflows its vessel,
Longing with every turn to cast away fragments of the self,
Until nothing remains in the circle
Except the Song itself.
