Eat at Zhou's
I've always loved Denis Hopper's style of painting. He captures little pieces of Americana with meaning and understatement. Like the quintessential diner, a place to stop for a late-night meal. Something we can all relate to. I've also been a huge fan of science fiction, including the works of Philip K. Dick. He was master of crafting an alternate world where the axis won WW2 instead of the allies. This piece builds on these ideas, blending Americana with Chinese culture. If the mid 20th century American culture took place in China, Hopper would have painting "Eat at Zhou's". Zhou is a very common Chinese family name. And it is pronounced essentially the same as the English "Joe". Thus, another American meme, "Eat at Joe's" is transformed into a piece of alternative history "Chinesecana". Zhou's is an inviting place. After a long day at work, or out clubbing, stop in and have a midnight snack and some quite conversation.
