“They Called It Medicine” is now owned by Sian, founder of MoDDA, and a dear friend. I’m deeply grateful that this piece has found its collector and that its story gets to continue being carried forward. They Called It Medicine is a reflection on the long history of women’s pain being misunderstood, dismissed, and turned into diagnoses simply because they were women. The piece draws from the history of women like Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey, whose suffering became part of medical history while their humanity was pushed into the margins. This piece is an attempt to remember them beyond the history that was written about them.
