Moments of the Unknown - Paintings

Moments of the Unknown – Paintings is a series of 366 works, each drawn from a single day of a year-long Super 8 film portrait project shot across all seven continents. Each painting begins with the original Super 8 footage. A single frame is pulled from the film like a photograph, then reinterpreted through ChatGPT image generation: a machine’s reading of a memory. The image returns to the hand, painted onto canvas one color layer at a time, and is resolved in a final black layer of silkscreen. The painting then leads back to its source. A custom augmented reality application, developed with Claude Code, recognizes each canvas and restores the moving image it came from, returning the still to time. An AI poet trained on the artist’s voice speaks and sings the journal entry written that day, from which each painting takes its title. Film, photography, artificial intelligence, painting, printmaking, and voice each hold the same moment differently. Layered together, they carry it from analog film to machine interpretation, back to the human hand, and finally back into motion, asking what a memory keeps, and what it becomes, each time it changes form.
