Rokurokubi are yokai from Japanese folklore. By day they appear completely normal and live among humans, often going unnoticed. When they fall asleep, their bodies become still while their necks begin to stretch and move on their own, with their heads able to travel far from their bodies without limit. The only restriction is the neck itself: if it is cut, the creature dies. Rokurokubi were not born as supernatural beings. They were once ordinary women, cursed for a sin, a broken promise, or the fault of others, very often the wrongdoing of a man in their lives. In some stories they are not even aware of their true nature and do not understand why misfortune follows them. They appear in old legends, homes, inns, and brothels, always on the edge between sleep and wakefulness, as if they never fully belonged to the world of humans or the world of spirits.
