Burgan is the world's largest sandstone oil field, and the second-largest overall in Kuwait. In 1991, retreating Iraqi soldiers set Burgan Field on fire during the 1st Gulf War in a scorched earth tactic. Smoke extended 10s of kilometers in the sky. My memory is very clear of this hard time even though I was a kid back then. I remember it like yesterday. We used to go up the roof and see the flames 40 kilometers away from our house. There was no power the first few months after the war, so everything was in complete silence. We could hear a faint roar of the fire from that distance. Our days looked like nights, and nights had this red tint in the sky making it feel like day.
