Gennargentu Mountains, Sardinia, Italy
Rising from the rugged interior of Sardinia, the Gennargentu Mountains form the highest mountain range on the island, a landscape of deep valleys, ancient stone paths, and isolated communities shaped by geography across centuries.
Its name derives from the Sardinian expression "Gennargentu" often translated as "Silver Gate" a reference to the mountain peaks that appear silver during winter frost and changing Mediterranean light.
For generations, these mountains created natural isolation across central Sardinia. Villages remained separated by terrain rather than connected by roads, preserving traditions, diets, social structures, and rhythms of life that evolved slowly over hundreds of years.
